The opening of the 2020 Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship Program has been further delayed.

The Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship Program is a very popular program, the opening of which is much awaited each year.

For the last few years, January 1 has been an exciting day as Canadian Permanent Residents and Canadian Citizens would get the opportunity to express their interest or submit an application to sponsor their parents or grandparents for Canadian Permanent Residence. A few different methods have been implemented in the last several years - from a first come first serve courier entry, to a lottery system, to a first come first serve online interest form followed by an invitation to apply. All methods caused many individuals frustration as the intake cap was minimal and quickly reached.

We have been closely monitoring the new intake process to be followed for 2020 and were anticipating some guidance to be released on January 1. However, the Liberal government had postponed the 2020 Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship Program and had announced that guidance on the intake of this Program would be available by April 1, 2020, at the latest.

Most recently, due to COVID-19, IRCC has decided that the opening of the 2020 Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship program would be further delayed.

Despite this delay, there may be other options available for parents and grandparents to obtain Canadian Permanent Residence.
