Job Description

We are currently looking for a Legal Assistant with 4 - 6 years of experience in the area of general civil and commercial litigation. This position requires someone with strong administrative and organizational skills. The incumbent must be able to work well under pressure, multi-task, prioritize work, and take direction. A team oriented approach and the ability to work in a fast paced environment are also essential.

Specific Duties

  • Opening and closing client files and preparation of engagement letters
  • File management including organizing and maintaining correspondence files, trial binders, transcript binders, document binders and other components
  • General administrative duties such as, filing, scanning, printing, faxing, and emailing documents
  • Manage calendars, billing, invoicing, and bring-forward system
  • Draft basic legal documents including correspondence, simple pleadings, and rudimentary applications with only general instuctions
  • Prepare simple affidavits of records with little supervision and more comoplex affidavits of recors with supervision
  • Prepare more complex documents such as briefs, factums, complex affidavits, exhibit and other binders for trial with specific instuctions

Knowledge and Skill Requirements

  • Legal Assistant Diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution
  • Minimum of 4-6 years' experience in the areas of general civil and commercial litigation
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Demonstrated knowledge of litigation practices and procedures
  • Excellent proofreading skills (ability to check typed material for grammatical, typographical, spelling, word usage, and format errors)
