Citizenship Qualification

Canadian Citizenship may be obtained by permanent residents if they have accumulated 3 years of legal residence out of the last 4 years prior to the submission of their application for Citizenship. Current jurisprudence is in a constant state of flux as there are competing principles as to what constitutes legal residence.

Applications for Citizenship are sent to Sydney Nova Scotia. Local offices will be involved at the interview stage. Testing of Canadian knowledge and knowledge of Official language skills are now done by written examination except where residency is at issue.

Numerous changes are being contemplated to the Citizenship Act which may change the residency and other requirements.
