Self Employed immigrants are those persons who may become permanent residents on the basis of their ability to become economically established in Canada and who have the relevant experience and have the intention and ability to be self-employed in Canada and to make significant contribution to specified economic activities in Canada.

Relevant experience is defined in the Regulations as a minimum of 2 years out of the past 5 before the submission of the immigration application which are consisting of one of the following:

a) self employment in cultural activities

b) participation at a world class level in cultural activities

c) self employment in athletics

d) participation at a world class level in athletics

e) experience in the management of a farm.

These requirements listed above are applicable to the Federal Self-employed category. There is another category of self-employed persons selected by a province which are governed by the individual rules set by each province which has an agreement with the Federal government in respect of a selection process.
